CUSTODIAN
Latest in a distinguished line of multi-gas
portable instruments comes
the Custodian. The product of significant
R&D investment, this instrument has been
designed primarily to meet the needs of
confined space workers.
However, its many features make it suitable for
a host of applications requiring the monitoring of one to four gases.
Dependable
Custodian with its reputation
for reliable and dependable instrument. Its robust mechanical
construction and advanced electronics
ensure that it will perform even in the
harshest environments. Ingress Protection
is to IP66. Naturally the unit is certified
intrinsically safe for use in hazardous
areas.
User Friendly
All aspects of the design have been
considered with the user in mind. The
ergonomic shape and simple pushbutton operation for function selection
demonstrate this.
The display can be blanked and functions
can be locked out with passwords if a
tamper-proof, alarm-only detector is
required. Important for the confined space
worker, Custodian weighs in at 500g and is
small enough to be worn in a breast pocket.
A belt clip and chest harness option further
increase its wearability. A carrying case
and alarm earphone are available as
options.
Clear Alarms and Display
A pair of ultra bright red LEDs flash in a
distinctive 'police car' sequence
through lenses which make them
visible over a wide field of view. A
loud audible sounder reinforces the
message with a selectable tone.
Gas readings (peak or current), scanning between sensors, are presented on a custom liquid Crystal Display with excellen contrast over a wide viewing angle. large digits for gas values are augmented by clear symbols for warnings such as low battery. A display backlight comes on when any button is pressed and turns off after 10 seconds.
State of the Art
A single chip microcontroller performs all
control and measurement functions.
Modern materials and injection moulding
techniques have permitted a case design
which is highly functional, aesthetic and
easy to maintain. Ultra compact gas
sensors have contributed to size and
weight reductions.
Range of Sensors
3 and 4 channel instruments are available
with one pellistor sensor for LEL flammable
gas, up to two electro-chemical toxic gas
sensors and one oxygen sensor. Sensors
for % volume flammable gas and for low
levels of hydrocarbons or organic solvents
are available.
If less than four sensors are required,
unused slots are blanked off.
Dual gas instruments are available with
flammable and oxygen, or flammable and
one toxic sensors.
Integral Pump
The instrument is available in diffusion or
pumped format. With the pumped option, a
special flow adaptor is attached to the
sensor grille which automatically turns the
pump on and passes sample gas over the
sensors.
Programmable Alarms
For each gas channel, there are up to three instantaneous alarms. In addition,
toxic gas channels have two time weighted
average alarms assigned. These operate
on 15 minute and 8 hour exposure periods.
All thresholds may be adjusted.
Instantaneous alarms may be latching or
self resetting, rising or failing, and may be
set so that the sounder can be silenced
while the unit is still in an alarm condition.
Unwanted alarms may be deactivated.
Instruments can be supplied with alarms
configured to customer specification. A
pass code protects the instrument against
unauthorised changes.
Battery Pack
The detachable battery pack can be replaced in a hazardous zone for round the clock operation.
Rechargeable packs utilise nickel hydride batteries with a life of up to 1000 charge cycles. These batteries are environmentally friendly as they do not use cadmium and are therefore easily disposable.
These will power an instrument with one flammable sensor and three electro-chemical sensors for up to 16 hours. Primary (dry cell) packs requiring 4 AA cells are also available.
Easy to Maintain
Regular calibration is straightforward, utilising
the built-in pump or calibration adaptor.
Adjustment of gas readings is by easy push
button or computer interface functions. An
Autocalibrator is available to streamline batch
calibration.
PC Interface
SetCustodian is a dedicated program running
under Windows TM which allows full access to
instrument configuration and logged data files. It
also simplifies the calibration procedure.
Data Logging
Internal logging software records gas data
continuously, beginning a new report when the
instrument is switched on. Also running under
Windows TM, LogManager software, in
conjunction with SetCustodian, provides access
to these data reports which may be presented in
graphical or tabular format. Output files are
compatible with most spreadsheets.
Special Versions
Models for gas testing (without alarms) are
available using pellistor or thermal conductivity
sensors. A version with a semiconductor sensor
is offered for general gas leak tracing.

TRIPLE PLUS
Triple Plus gas detectors are renowned throughout the world. Their effectiveness in protecting people against flammable and toxic gas hazards as well as deficiency or
enrichment of oxygen has been proved time and time again and their
robustness means that they operate with little maintenance in the most
arduous conditions.
Choice of Sensors
Whilst most multi-gas portable
instruments are built to monitor methane,
hydrogen sulphide and oxygen, Triple
Plus can be fitted with any practical
combination of pellistor, electro-chemical
or thermal conductivity sensors. So the
Triple Plus range includes dual, triple and
quadruple gas models.
Autoranging Flammable Gas Version
This incorporates both pellistor and thermal conductivity
sensors. The software switches off the pellistor when the Lower
Explosive Limit of the gas is exceeded and displays the gas
concentration in % volume.
Purpose Designed Electronics
The major electronic components are surface mounted on a single
board with a daughter board for the intrinsic safety critical
components. The two line, 24 character dot matrix LCD display
will show up to four gas channel readings simultaneously. A
button operates a back light which turns off after 30 minutes.
Simple Controls
In normal operation, the sounder gives a
confidence blip once every three seconds
and a green LED flashes.
In the event of an emergency, a large bright
red LED comes on, and a loud alarm will be
heard. The gas level can be read from the
display. Readings for toxic gases can be set
to show either the current level or the
timeweighted average (TWA) level since switch
on. Alternatively the display can be set to
freeze peak values.
Real and elapsed time since switching on
are available on the display.
Versatile Alarm Modes
Alarms for flammable gases (normally set to
20% LEL) and oxygen (normally set to 19%
and 23%) trigger as soon as the threshold
level is reached.
Alarms for toxic gases can be set to trigger
when a threshold is reached, normally the 8
hour occupational exposure limit (OEL),
and/or when the 15 minute OEL (TWA) and 8
hour OEL (TWA) are exceeded.
Practical
The sealed lead acid battery pack provides
enough capacity for twelve hours of
continuous use. Charging is accomplished by
locating the instrument into the charger or
charger/interface unit
Light and Rugged
Triple Plus is moulded from Triax and its
design ensures that it is extremely strong.
Special sealing techniques are used to
provide protection against water and dust
ingress to IP65. Aspirators and internal
pumps are options as is a baffle plate for use
in muddy conditions; a leather carrying case
with waist strap and alarm earphone are
available. The instrument weighs only 9009.
Ease of Maintenance
We recommend monthly checking of the
instrument with test gas. Six monthly
calibration is easily carried out, using push
buttons. Calibration due warning is provided
after programming in the appropriate date.
An Autocalibrator is available, giving a full
printout of all calibration parameters.
Computer Interface
By locating the instrument into its
charger/interface, communication via an RS232
serial link to a computer terminal is simplicity
itself. Using this facility, alarm levels and the
clock can be adjusted, data logging can be
accessed and the passcode can be changed.
Crowcon's software has been designed to
facilitate this and to enable data to be stored for
spreadsheet use.
Data Logging
When set up for data logging, sample readings
are taken during a shift and the recorded data can
be downloaded into a printer or a computer, via
the serial interface built into the charger/interface.
Data reports incorporate the instrument serial
number to simplify analysis.

GASMAN
Personal Gas Monitors
Everyone nowadays is aware of the potential problems when people
have to work in areas where the
atmosphere contains a toxic gas at
concentrations around or above the
8 hour Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL)
Gasman range provides continuous, economical and
reliable protection for the individual and there are versions for a wide
range of gases.
The Gasman OX is a similar unit but provides warning if the oxygen
level drops to a dangerous level or rises to a point where there is
increased risk of fire.
If the risk is from possible leakage of flammable gases or vapours
the Gasman FL meets the need.
Alarm and Measuring
All models in the range have a large front
mounted digital display, incorporating a
push button operated back light. A green
LED flashes intermittently to confirm that the
unit is functioning. When dangerous
conditions occur a loud audible alarm
operates and a red LED on top of the
instrument flashes.
Intrinsically Safe
Personal gas detectors are, more often than
not, used in potentially explosive
atmospheres and the Gasman range is
therefore intrinsically safe.
Lightweight Personal Monitoring
The sensor is mounted on the top of the
instrument to ensure that it can detect gas
quickly when placed in the top pocket. The case
is injection moulded from Triax to ensure
resistance to knocks, is dust and water resistant
to 1P65 and is fitted with a clip. A carrying case
with shoulder strap is standard, and an alarm
earphone is an option.
Power is by four AA size batteries providing many
hours of operation (up to 4 months for toxic gas
and oxygen versions when used during a normal
40 hour working week). A rechargeable battery
pack is optional. A continuous audible alarm
operates when the battery is low and the green
LED no longer flashes.

Applications
Steel Works. Particularly for employees working
around coke ovens, where CO is a potential
problem.
Oil rigs and petrochemical plants. Most crude oil
contains traces of H2S. This will leak to the
atmosphere during any oil spillage, and is
removed and vented during refining.
Marine. Personal monitoring is often required
onboard ship, especially in engine rooms, or for
storage and transfer of hazardous cargo.
General personnel protection in hazardous areas
such as tunnels, construction sites and sewage
plants.
DETECTIVE
Detective is a novel transportable gas detecting unit which enables a
multi-gas monitoring system to be set up on any potentially hazardous
site within minutes. If a small area needs monitoring while personnel are working, a single unit can be used to detect up to four different gases. To protect a larger area a number of Detectives can be linked together, providing a protective barrier around the work site.
Rugged, Sturdy and Effective
The main body of the unit is injection
moulded and is protected against water
and dust ingress to IP65. The unit is
mounted on a galvanised and enamel
finished tripod frame which maximises
stability. The frame encircles the unit to add
further protection, therefore making
Detective ideal for the most hostile areas.
Detectives can be linked together via 10
metre leads. When one unit detects gas, it
goes into alarm and activates an
omnidirectional sounder and four red LED
clusters on top, These flash two at a time
in quick succession. Other units are
activated via the linking leads and they too
operate their lights and sounders. The
Detective which has detected the gas is
identified by its warning lights flashing at a
faster rate and the red warning LED on its
control panel being on.
Should the gas cloud move to another
unit, the alarm indicator on that unit will
activate and the LEDs on top will speed
up to match other units that are detecting
gas.
Multi-Functional, Simple Controls
Detective can monitor up to four gases
simultaneously and it offers a peak
reading hold facility and time weighted
average alarms and readings. Data
logging is built in as standard.
There are four push button controls on the
front control panel for On/off operation,
display backlight and calibration. When
switching a unit on it goes through a self
test routine and checks the battery level. In
normal operation a green LED on the front
flashes every three seconds to confirm
normal working. The LCD display with
manually operated backlight shows gas
readings continuously. Detective is
calibrated after entering a passcode, using
the push buttons.
There is a low battery alarm to
indicate when charging is required.
Alarms for flammable gases and oxygen
trigger as soon as the threshold level is
reached. Alarms for toxic gases con be
set to trigger when a threshold is reached
and/or when the 15 minute or 8 hour OEL
(TWA) are exceeded.

Practical
Detective's sensors are located underneath the
body of the unit for protection.
The sealed lead acid battery pack provides
enough capacity for 24 hours continuous
monitoring and half an hour in alarm mode. The
battery is charged from the mains supply via a
socket on the back plate (11 OV or 24OV AC).
When Detectives are not in use they can be
stacked for convenient storage.
Applications
General working. Hazardous areas particularly
offshore, petrochemical and chemical sites. Where
people are working on a temporary basis, Detective
can be used singly or linked together to warn of
flammable gas clouds.
Underground construction/sewer work.
People working in confined spaces, tunnels, sewers
etc. will require local warning of gas hazards as well
as the facility to warn others above ground or
further along the tunnel.
Shipping. The unloading of hazardous cargo is a
useful application for Detective as it will warn
against accidental spillage of flammable liquids.
Plant Shut-down. Using Detective provides
necessary protection during maintenance and
shut-down of plant.
AUTOCALIBRATOR II
As with any other type of instrumentation, portable gas
detectors rely on routine calibration for effective operation. This
can be time consuming for users with large numbers of
portable gas detectors. To help solve this problem we offer the Autocalibrator II.
The Autocalibrator, which is suitable for
use with Custodian, Triple Plus and
Detective is used in conjunction with a PC
and provides a fully automatic calibration
routine with optional data logging. Housed
in a compact bench mounting enclosure,
the unit can be connected to up to five
cylinders of calibration gas mixtures. An
inlet for an air cylinder is also available but
normal room air can be used where
appropriate. The unit includes all the
necessary internal pumps and solenoid
valves, provision for a Custodian or Triple
Plus adaptor, and an RS232 cable for
connection to the serial port of the PC. The
adaptors allow the Autocalibrator to
interface to the instrument.
The operation of the unit is controlled by
software, which runs in Windows TM. With the required gas
cylinders and PC connected, a simple
keystroke is all that is required to initiate the
calibration routine.
Once initiated, the unit will display on the
PC monitor the model and serial number of
the detector being calibrated, followed by
the gases that the monitor has been set up
to detect, along with the relevant alarm
levels. The unit will then automatically
present each gas in turn to the detector
and at the end of a preset period adjust
the sensor output to the correct
calibration.
When all the sensors have been calibrated,
the unit purges the system with air and
stores the calibration information in a file
unique to that instrument. This provides an
ongoing database of service and
calibration history. The same information
can also be printed as hard copy. Should a
sensor fail calibration for any reason, the
system will advise the user accordingly.
FIXED SYSTEMS
In addition to our range of portable detectors, supplies a comprehensive range of
gas and fire detection and gas sampling systems.
Gasmaster
Designed to be inexpensive and
simple to install and operate,
Gasmaster can be used with any combination of flammable
and toxic gas detectors.
The front panel features easy to read
indications of power and gas
concentration, and individual LEDs are
provided for two levels of alarm and fault
for each channel. Common relays are
included for high alarm, low alarm and fault
as well as individual relays for high and
low alarm. In addition, other outputs are
provided for up to two YL4 Yodalights and
individual analogue outputs.
The slimline case is water and dust
resistant to IP54 (NEMA 4) and an optional
IP66 (NEMA 4X) external case is also
available. A flameproof (Ex cl) version of
Gasmaster is also offered.
Gasmonitor
Gasmonitor is a 19 " rack mounting control
panel housing up to 16 input modules.
Each gas detection module can be used
with any of gas detector, and each
twin zone fire module can be used with
up to 20 fire detectors per zone.
The system is microprocessor
controlled, giving the user total flexibility
in configuration, alarm setup and relay
operation. The design also incorporates
features that allow the operator to
perform one man calibration at the
detector, automatic data logging, three
levels of alarm as standard, voted
outputs, and RS232 communications.
Ditech
Ditech is a modular fire and gas
detection system intended primarily for
major petrochemical and offshore
projects. Designed in a 19" format the
system comprises a number of input and
output cards which can be configured
to suit a particular application.
Gaslink
Gaslink is a 4-20 mA output gas detector using our entire range
of flammable and toxic gas sensors.
Toxic versions use a two wire field
connection and operate as a current
sink (loop powered). Zener barriers are
required for hazardous area use.
Flammable gas versions use a three
wire field connection and a special
Zener barrier is available to operate
them from a 24V supply.
The detector utilises our own
polyester Ex e junction box which is rated
to IP66 (NEMA 4X). The transmitter
includes an LCD display which in normal
operation indicates gas concentration, and
in conjunction with the two pushbuttons is
also used for calibration and test. All
Gaslink detectors are certified intrinsically
safe when used with approved Zener
barriers.
D15/6 & D19
D19 uses a poison resistant pellistor
sensor to detect flammable gases. The
design incorporates a high grade
stainless steel body and sinter, and
encapsulated internal assembly. For high
temperature (up to 20OoC) and high
concentration (0-100% volume)
applications, special versions are
available.
D15/6 is intended for more demanding
applications, such as offshore, with two
part body construction allowing the
pellistor sensor to be easily changed.
Sampling Systems
We supply a range of gas sampling systems to suit
special applications. Preconfigured
systems are supplied for landfill sites and
for monitoring engines powered by
alternative fuels. In addition, air sampling
and environmental sampling units are
available which operate in conjunction with
a standard detector. Custom built systems
are designed and constructed to suit
customers specific applications.
