ACCELERATED POLISHING MACHINE

S882- ACCELERATED POLISHING MACHINE

DETERMINATION OF POLISHED STONE VALUE
  • EN 1097-8:2009 (formerley BS812: Part 114: 1989)
  • ASTM E303-93
  • ASTM D3319-99
The Accelerated Polishing Machine is the industry standard device for the determination of the Polished Stone Value PSV

Our Accelerated Polishing Machine S882-APM was develpoed over 30 years ago, and more than 1000 APMs have been sold globally. In 1950 increased traffic flow and higher speeds, together with concerns about road safety led to research into the relationship between road materials and skid-resistance. Research at the UK Transport Road Research Laboratory showed a significant relationship between polishing of aggregates used in road surfaces and skid resistance. Tests were devised using an Accelerated Polishing Machine and a friction measuring device (known as the Pendulum Skid Tester, also supplied by Mastrad), to determine a Polished Stone Value (PSV).
Fourteen specimen aggregate samples are clamped around a rotating Road Wheel. These samples are subjected to two timed stages of abrasive polishing under a loaded rubber tyre. First by Corn Emery grit, and secondly by Flour Emery powder.
As the best quality market leaders our machine has been copied by low quality manufacturers. Imitators’ machines may look similar, but precision, repeatability and reproducibility come only with years of experience.

Function

The PSV test calculates a Polished Stone Value for aggregates used in road surfaces, which gives a measure of the resistance to skidding.

The test is carried out by using two machines, S882 - the Accelerated Polishing Machine, and S885 - Skid Tester, (see separate Data Sheet for this machine). The Accelerated Polishing Machine polishes samples of aggregates, simulating actual road conditions.

Test Procedure

Fourteen specimens are clamped around the road wheel of the PSV machine, and subjected to two stages of polishing by a loaded rubber tyre. First by corn emery, and secondly by emery flour.

Users of the Test

Local Authorities, Consulting Engineers, Contractors, Asphalt Producers, and Civil Engineering Departments of Universities.

Road Safety

Use of the PSV s in road construction has had a major influence in reduction of accidents.
